About the Reserve

Shamwari Game Reserve started as a small 1200-hectare farm. Within 15 years, Shamwari expanded to 25 000 hectares. Through research, it was discovered that the Eastern Cape used to be one of the richest wildlife areas in Africa. However, due to hunting, farming and drought, most of the animal species, including the Big Five, were eliminated during the 19th century. It is the owners’ vision to preserve the history, flora and fauna in the Eastern Cape. Together with a committed team sharing the same passion, they developed their dream into the award-winning Shamwari Game Reserve of today. Today, their game reserve offers 6 separate 5-star lodges, an Explorer Camp and 3 different education and rehabilitation facilities.

Game drives will take 3 – 3.5 hours depending on how much time is spent at each sighting. It is advisable to bring warm clothes along for the drive even in the hot summer months. Your game ranger will provide ponchos and warm blankets and has a bird book and binoculars. Remember to bring your camera and video camera with you.

All safari options in the Eastern Cape are in relatively newly established private game reserves and thus it is not fair to compare to a safari in a more established game viewing area like Kruger National Park which has been around for a hundred or so years.
That said, this reserve is truly special and offers some amazing wildlife moments in a stark and arid, yet beautiful enviroment.

Sindile, Shamwari’s new luxury tented camp is a secluded, luxury getaway set deep in the African veld.

Named for the famed leopard of Shamwari, the camp mimics a solitary leopard’s sanctuary, blending with the surrounding bush while providing excellent vantages over the Bushman’s River and surrounding plains.

Sindile is isiXhosa for ‘survivor’, testament to the celebrated leopardess that survived numerous lion maulings to raise five litters of cubs.

The nine luxury free-standing tents are elevated above the surrounding bush, allowing uninhibited views, unsullied by any other man-made structures or light pollution. The harmonious, intimate design minimises the environmental footprint.

The dining area and bar are situated to make the most of the views over the reserve, with focal points including a large harvest table and fire pit.

When you book at Sindile, you’re treated to a host of world-class facilities such as:

  • Reception and Lounge
  • Gift Boutique
  • Dining room with fireplace
  • Bar and Lounge with fireplace and big screen television
  • Deck with firepit
  • Boma
  • Relaxation Retreat
  • WiFi connection
During South Africa’s summer season, Shamwari Game Reserve expands its offerings even further by opening the Explorer Camp.

This once-in-a-lifetime experience takes guests on a guided walking safari of the surrounding land, allowing you to get up close and personal with nature. Each tent is luxuriously furnished for comfort in the wilderness.

We firmly believe that travel needs to be simplified by going back to basics. This package not only reflects the core ideals of our safaris but aims to deliver an eye-opening encounter with nature.

Our wilderness bush camp itinerary comprises a 2-night trail, departing each Friday, with an optional 3rd night on request.  The camp operates from October to April.

To awaken your natural instinct and get in touch with nature, look no further than Shamwari Game Reserve for a summer adventure. Contact us today to book your spot and experience our Explorer Camp.

The camp site is discreetly fenced for safety reasons but retains true explorer ambiance. The tents are placed in close proximity without encroaching on the other tents privacy.

Culinary feasts are presented around the camp fire with exquisite silverware. And best of all, guests wake up to tea/coffee, served in front of their tents.

There is also a classic portable bar with crystal glassware to enjoy the traditional gin and tonic on the viewing deck.

Shamwari Private Game Reserve has the above 7 five star lodges and 1 explorer camp; each providing distinct experiences. From exclusive tranquillity, effortless family enjoyment or the back-to-nature appeal of a luxury tented camp.

Depart from your Port Elizabeth hotel or the airport late morning and head east along the N2 and take a left northwards along the R342 towards Patterson, arriving at Shamwari around an hour later.

There are 7 separate lodges at Shamwari Private Game Reserve along with the seasonal Explorers Camp, so please make sure you arrive at the correct one (we can arrange private transfers to make it easier if you wish, see rates below).

Once checked into your room around 2:00pm, freshen up, enjoy some lunch and prepare for your 3 hour evening game drive starting at 3:00 pm in the winter and around 4:00 pm in the summer months. Home to the ‘Big Five’ as well as many species of mammals, reptiles and birds, prepare for an amazing experience. Using all their senses & experience, your Ranger will seek out the animals and stop for anything of interest, possibly the spoor of hunting lions or a herd of African elephants. Sunset time is enjoyed on a vantage point with some sundowners and snacks, before we change into night mode and using flashlights, search for the secretive nocturnal creatures of the bush like a sleek genet or unforgettable view of a leopard. Upon returning to the Lodge, a blazing fire and yummy dinner awaits, along with your first night’s sleep in the African bush.

Your Ranger will awake you with coffee, tea and rusks before heading out into the sunrise to see what has been happening in the dead of night and follow spoor of animals on the move. You will also be lead on foot to discover sights which you would miss from a vehicle. A new day with birds in song, this truly is a beautiful way to wake up in South Africa. Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast and possibly relax around the pool reclining upon a chaise lounge, take in the amazing views overlooking the reserve from the lodge deck or enjoy your own chalet for a few hours before lunch is served in the lodge.
We repeat the previous evenings cycle and head out again in the late afternoon for another game drive and return for dinner at the lodge.
Enjoy your last early morning game drive with your experienced game ranger, pursuing the animals not yet ticked off your list.

After your game activity you will return to the lodge for breakfast before check out around 11:00am for your onward journey or return private transfer back to Port Elizabeth hotel or airport (if included).
